Yoga has long been known for the health benefits it provides. However, yoga studios and journals usually feature not just thin but skinny models doing impossible poses. Many people may assume that yoga is only for young, fit, and flexible girls. In fact, overweight people greatly benefit from this practice as well.
A study on the association between yoga and weight loss
You have some extra pounds and you can hardly bend your body to pick up things you drop. It might seem to be reasonable to doubt your success rate in yoga. Indeed, it can help take those pounds off your body. A study funded by the National Cancer Institute has shown an association between practice and weight loss. According to this study, the overweight people who were assigned yoga sessions lost approximately 5 pounds. Within that time frame, those who were not practicing put on 14 pounds.
How it works
There has not been a scientific answer to the question how yoga works to keep you fit. The mechanism, albeit unclear, may be related to the relationship between the mind and the body. It does not burn fat aggressively like workouts, or running. It influences the way your mind work, creating a harmony between the body and the mind. Eventually, it will affect your lifestyle habits, like eating. It is believed that this practice makes you more in control of your appetite. You will unconsciously change the way you perceive food and how your stomach considers as being full.
Tips to make yoga work for you
Do not practice in front of a mirror. It may be tempting to check in the mirror to see if your posture is correct. However, instructors believe yoga works better when you focus on the internal experience rather than the outer look. It is good to challenge yourself with complicated postures, but when you feel tired, a short rest is in place. Avoid pushing too hard, or you will be overwhelmed and more likely to give up. Finally, creating a schedule and stick to it, whether you choose to go to class or practice at home.
If you have once looked at the extra fats on your body and think yoga is not for you, perhaps it is time to reconsider. Two sessions every week may be able to make a difference for you. However, if you want to get fit faster, maybe it is not so effective.
