Treatment for Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition which many women experience, especially women in and after pregnancy period. So how can we reduce and treat melasma? Let read this article to find the answer

Treatment for Melasma

Tri-luma method

This has long been considered the gold solution for melasma. Tri-luma is a topical skin care product consisting of 3 main ingredients:

  • Hydroquinone that lightens the skin;
  • Retinoid accelerates the skin replacement cycle;
  • Corticosteroid to reduce inflammation.

Hydroquinone works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that plays an important role in the formation of melanin.

According to a study at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt in New York, about 70% of patients have improved their skin condition by up to 75% within 2 months using Triluma. However, the effect of this product has a minus point; the pigment will slowly return after you stop taking.

In particular, for patients with dark skin, long-term use of hydroquinone can cause darker skin or permanent discoloration. Therefore, dermatologists usually only show patients taking tri-luma for 2 to 4 months to blot spots. Then, they alternate with other over-the-counter medications over the next few months.

Acid Kojic Products

Good melasma products usually contain kojic acid. This is a component of skin lightening by tyrosinase inhibitors. You should take them 2 times daily for 2 to 3 months. To achieve optimal results, choose to buy products containing additional lightening ingredients. Examples are arbutin or vitamin C.

Laser therapy

The best, safest, and most effective option for you is low power laser. However, the effect is only seen after 4 to 6 treatments. In order to optimize the effect of melasma treatment, doctors can combine laser therapy with other treatments such assuper abrasion therapy and topical treatments. The mechanism of this method is that the laser will be responsible for creating micro holes in the skin. Those holes will make it easier for the products to be absorbed into the skin.

Chemical mask

If you have used the above-mentioned skin products and still do not improve your skin condition, use a chemical mask every 1 to 2 months. The mask containing salicylic acid will help improve your skin. And they also bring the least complication. However, you should consult your doctor first to see if this method is suitable for your skin condition.

Always use sunscreen when you go out

Ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause skin burns. You should apply sunscreen regularly even when you are at home because certain UV rays can go through the window and adversely affect your skin. A wide spectrum sunscreen will help you fight both UVA and UVB rays. Physical sunscreen ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the best sunscreens. You must be sure to find out if your product contains these two ingredients. Also, remember to apply the cream every 3-4 hours, especially when going out.

Melasma can be cured if you seriously follow the treatment. You can prevent melasma by using sunscreen every day.
