Screening for Heart Disease in Athletes

Currently, cardiovascular disease is one of the major diseases in the world, have a high risk of death. This disease is the second cause of death in athletes in the United States. So we need to have a heart disease screening for athletes.

Screening for Heart Disease in Athletes

Research on athletes

Athletes participating in physical activity subjects at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Explaining the findings, experts believe that the training hours and competition can cause increased pressure on their cardiovascular system. Over the last year, in the UK had 7 deaths while playing in the athletic contests have caused significant concern of the sports world, doctors, and public opinion. Most of the deaths in athletes are due to disorders of the cardiovascular system. Coronary artery disease causes sudden death is most common in athletes over 35 years old. For athletes under 35 years of age, most cases of sudden death are due to genetics or cardiac disorders cause malignant ventricular arrhythmias.

The researchers analyzed data from 1,435 male athletes and 919 female athletes with an average age of 27.6. Results showed that 171 athletes (equivalent to 7.3%) had an abnormal structure or cardiac electrophysiology. 6 of 171 athletes are considered at risk of “life-threatening”. Cardiovascular abnormalities were identified as coronary heart disease and dilated cardiomyopathy (cardiomyopathies), which is one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac death.

Sudden death in athletes

Most cases of sudden death in athletes are due to hereditary cardiomyopathy, mainly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or heart muscle disease right ventricular arrhythmias. Sudden death due to cardiovascular causes can also occur due to causes such suffering from myocarditis, drug misuse or injury. Most cases of sudden death are induced because of exertion. So the athletes compete in intense physically active subjects are recommended should be examined health carefully. To ensure the competition safely and without risk of cardiovascular problems, they should avoid participating in high strenuous sports for them. For athletes suffering from myocarditis, it is best to stop competing until heart function recovered completely.

The identification of cardiovascular disorders in an athlete can prevent sudden death. Currently, the most realistic measure is to raise awareness about the pathological condition that can cause sudden death due to cardiovascular and recommended a screening program for athletes.
