Identify and Care for an Amoxicillin Rash

What is an amoxicillin rash?

Rash is a common side effect of taking antibiotics. However, amoxicillin is more likely to cause a rash than other antibiotics. Amoxicillin and ampicillin are derivatives of the penicillin family, which is allergen for many people.

Identify and Care for an Amoxicillin Rash

Risk factors of an amoxicillin rash

  • An amoxicillin rash is more common in women than in men.
  • People with mononucleosis (mono) and lymphatic leukemia are more prone to having an amoxicillin rash.

How do you treat an amoxicillin rash?

Hives and rashes caused by amoxicilline sensitivity in children can be treated with over-the-counter Benadryl, using the dosage recommended for children. Stop giving your child antibiotics and check with your doctor to see if the reaction is due to an allergy. Rashes are unpredictable. Sometimes, they can be nothing serious, but other times, they may be the warning sign of a fatal immune response.

When should you see a doctor?

Most of the time, amoxicillin rashes will go away on their own after you stop giving your child antibiotics and the remaining medication has been eliminated from your child’s body. If the itchiness still persists, you may ask your doctor for a topical steroid cream.

Is the amoxicillin rash dangerous?

The rash itself is not dangerous. However, if it results from an allergy, it may be a cause for concern since the allergy may be dangerous. The more your child is exposed to the allergen, the more severe the reaction gets. If you continue to give your child antibiotics in spite of the rash, you child may develop an anaphylactic shock and stop breathing.

Prevention of an amoxicillin rash

It’s important to inform your doctor of any allergies your child has to any medication. Be detail about how the reaction was so your doctor may assess the severity and switch to another medication, if possible.

Home remedies for an amoxicillin rash

Here some tips to help your child get better:

  • Drink plenty of fluids. This helps your child’s body flush out the remaining medication, which helps relieve the rash and other discomfort. Plain water is the best option.
  • Take an oatmeal bath. Premixed oatmeal baths can be found in many grocery stores and pharmacy. Or, you can make your own by mixing a cup of oatmeal with warm water. Let your child soak in the bathtub for 15 to 30 minutes to soothe the discomfort. However, be careful when draining water afterward because oatmeal may clog your pipe.
