Baby Milestones: Sitting Up

When does a baby sit up?

Most babies can sit by on their own as they enter their 4th to 7th month. By that time, a baby probably has been able to roll over and hold his head up comfortably. 8-months-old babies may sit for a few minutes without support.

Baby Milestones: Sitting Up

How does a baby learn to sit?

Of course, you can always prop your baby to sit anytime, but he can only do that independently once he has mastered controlling his head. After the 4th month, his neck and head muscles strengthen rapidly, allowing him to raise and hold his head up while lying. The next step for him would be to figure out how to prop himself up using his arms, lifting his chest off. Next month, he will be able to sit for short periods of time. But you should be nearby to provide support because he may fall. After some time, your baby will learn to use his arms to stay balanced while sitting. By 8 months, he may sit without support and free his arms to explore the world.

Don’t be too worried

All you need to do is providing your baby with a lot of opportunities to practice sitting up. He’ll sit up when he is physically ready. Pay attention to your baby. If he slides off or can’t maintain his balance even if he has support, it may not be the time for him yet. It’s better to let him rest and try again. If your baby has just learned to sit up, he may get tired easily, fussing and complaining. Don’t force him to sit for too long. If he’s tired, let him lie down.

Since every baby has his or her own pace when it comes to growing up. If your baby doesn’t sit up by month 5, don’t be worried. There’s nothing wrong with your baby’s development. He’s not sick. Some babies may not sit up until they are 9 months old. Just continue to support and encourage your baby to sit up so he can get the chance to use and develop the necessary muscles. You can let your baby lie on his back and gently grab his hands and pull him up to a sitting position. Eventually, when his body is strong enough, he will be able to sit with ease.

Now that your baby can sit up, what’s next?

After a good amount of time sitting up, your baby will get the strength needed to start crawling and stand up. Then come his very first steps.
