Allergy Complication

Allergy is the condition in which your immune system reacts violently to harmless things such as pollen, certain food, mold or animal dander. Some allergies are life-threatening and can lead to dangerous complications.

Allergy Complication

Mild complications

Most people suffer from mild allergy complications at some point in their lives.  Rhinitis and sinusitis are two most commonly complications of allergies. Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal system. Its symptoms usually include sneezing, runny nose, blockage, and watery eyes. Also, it is common to experience itching in the nose, throat, eyes, and ears.

And sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses. Its symptoms include blockage, green or gray nasal mucus, post nasal drip, and a tight feeling in the face. Persistent headaches, fever and sometimes coughing may also be the signs of sinus inflammation. Over-the-counter medications can help treat mild complications. However, some people might need immunotherapy, or allergy shots to relieve the symptoms.

Hives

Hives are raised spots that are red and itchy. They appear when a person comes in contact with allergens relating to food or medicine. It causes the body to release excessive histamine. Patients with hives are likely to develop angioedema. It is a condition in which deep layers of skin swell up, resulting in deformities. And, if angioedema occurs in the throat, anaphylaxis may follow. Moreover, if you experience hives, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Hives can be managed with antihistamines.

Asthma

Allergy and asthma have a close relationship. When you come into contact with an allergen, your body releases antibodies triggering allergic reactions. They include inflamed airways, which can lead to a severe asthma attack. Therefore, patients with allergy-induced should carry an albuterol inhaler all times. Reducing the amount of exposure to allergens and early treatment can help reduce asthmatic responses.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is the most extreme complication, which can result in death. Possible symptoms of anaphylaxis are:

  • Red and itchy rashes,
  • Swollen throat,
  • Tightness in the chest,
  • Breathing difficulties,
  • Swallowing troubles,
  • Stomachache,
  • Abnormal pale or red face.

Patients with those symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Injectable epinephrine devices can ease the symptoms, however, medical treatments are still recommended.

The allergen sensitivity varies among people, so each person may experience different allergic reactions. Allergy complications range from those as simple as a runny nose to those as deadly as anaphylaxis. Therefore, patients should keep track of their symptoms to communicate with their doctors and get the best treatment.
